“The Shed” on Willis Street, is a pivotal $102.5 million project for the University of Tasmania’s health and medical education, completed in 2024.
This state-of-the-art facility has revolutionised health, medicine, and science education and research at the University of Tasmania, embodying the university’ strategic vision within the Northern Transformation Program.
Strategically positioned to bridge the bustling city of Launceston with the dynamic Inveresk Precinct, The Shed was designed to be both a landmark and a conduit for academic and community engagement.
Its architectural inspiration drew heavily from Inveresk’s historic 19th-century railway buildings, integrating this legacy with contemporary design principles.
The facility’s layout, featuring two elongated sheds surrounding a central courtyard atrium, not only facilitated a seamless flow of people and ideas but also created a lively and cohesive educational ecosystem.
This innovative approach to design has ensured The Shed serves as a navigational beacon, enhancing the precinct’s accessibility and fostering an environment of collaboration and discovery that is open and inviting to all.
